According to NFL Network, Ian Rapoport, both Ravens cornerback Marlon Huffrey and Ravens linebacker Roquan Smit are expected to miss several weeks because of injuries sustained in the Chiefs’ loss on Sunday.
Rapoport reports that Humphrey’s calf strain is not as severe as it could have possibly been. He reported Smith has a Grade 2 Hamstring Strain.
The Ravens’ defense is already depleted due to the injuries of both players. Ar’Darius Washington, whose Achilles was torn in the spring, and Nnamdi Madubuike, who suffered a neck injury in Week 2, are already out of the unit for the remainder of the season. Outside linebacker Kyle Van Noy has missed the past two games due to a hamstring strain, while second-year OLB Adisa Issac is yet to play in this season’s schedule because of a dislocated arm. Broderick Washing and Travis Jones were both injured in Week 4. The latter was placed on Injured Reserve and will miss at least three games. CB Nate Wiggins was also forced to leave the Kansas City game due to an elbow problem with an uncertain prognosis.
Keyon Martin, an undrafted rookie, replaced Humphrey as the slot player on Sunday. He will likely continue to fill this role in the future. Kyle Hamilton and Malaki starks can moonlight as nickel defensive backs, if necessary. However, they would need to have confidence that backup safeties Sanoussi kane and Reuben Lowery will cover the back.
The Ravens now have three healthy linebackers off the ball to replace Smith: Teddye Bucahanan (off-ball), Trenton Simpson and Jake Hummel. Buchanan, who has played in the Ravens’ last three games as a starter, will continue to play in that role. Simpson and Hummel are likely to rotate in like they did after Smith was injured on Sunday.
John Harbaugh, the head coach of the Ravens, did not provide any further details during his press conference on Monday. He said that the team will comment in the coming week once they have more information.
