5 questions for Ravens-Chiefs game: TEs play major role in both teams

In this week’s edition, Arrowhead Pride shared their opinions on the Chiefs’ matchup with the Ravens.

1. In their previous matchups, the Chiefs have used a variety of blitzing strategies against Lamar Jackson. What can the Ravens anticipate from their Sunday approach?

Steve Spagnuolo, the defensive coordinator at Kansas City, is well-known for his ability to keep Jackson off balance by using a variety of blitzes. This won’t be different on Sunday. Kansas City will use a mix of pressures to try and get him off balance, while also focusing on discipline in the rush lanes. Jackson must be kept in the pocket, as his ability to create explosive runs and extend plays will change the game if he is allowed to escape.

2. Baltimore’s run defence has been terrible this year. But the Chiefs rushing attack also hasn’t fared well. Is the problem with the Chiefs’ rushing attack more of an offensive line or backfield issue? Will Isaiah Pacheco be able to play well against the Ravens this week?

There are many factors that have contributed to the struggles. Pacheco hasn’t had a sharp vision, and his early play-calling was often too predictable. Kansas City changed things in the second half of last week, when they leaned more on effective run designs and opened up lanes for Pacheco. Pacheco’s ability to find rhythm is likely to increase if that balance continues in the second half against Baltimore.

3. The Chiefs’ defense has been very strong so far this season. What are their weaknesses against the Ravens specifically?

The Ravens have the best chance to win with their tight end. Mark Andrews, Isaiah Likely and Kansas City’s safeties and linebackers in coverage are tough opponents for both. Last year, Likely had nine catches totaling 111 yards with a touchdown in the regular-season matchup. He almost added a late game-winner, showing just how important that position group is against this defense.

4. This week, Xavier Worthy will return to the Chiefs’ lineup. What will this mean for the role and distribution of targets in the offense?

Worthy’s return brings another vertical threat into an offense that already benefits from Tyquan Thorthorn’s emergence. Baltimore’s defensive line will need to be aware of his speed, and keep one safety deep. This should allow for more opportunities below. Worthy, who is recovering from a shoulder problem, may be used as a decoy rather than a main target. Even in a limited role Worthy’s presence can stretch the field, creating space that helps Patrick Mahomes, and Travis Kelce.

5. What Chiefs star is going to shine brightest against Ravens and what lesser-known players could make a big impact?

It feels like Travis Kelce is asserting himself once again. The Chiefs’ speed should allow him to take advantage of the wide-open middle field. Brashard Smith, a rookie, could be the X-factor. He has the athleticism to be able to make big plays, which could give Kansas City a spark they need from their runningbacks.
