Joseph’s two years as head coach in Denver were not successful, but he did have a stronger roster than he would’ve had in Baltimore. Both years as Denver’s head coach, his defenses were impressive. They ranked third in yards in 2017 and thirteen thin points in 2018.
Joseph recently spoke with ESPN’s Peter Schrager about his first stint as head coach and what he might do differently if he were to try it again. He said that he had spent too much time trying to fix Denver’s quarterback problem.
I should have spent more time playing great defense. It was hard to find a Peyton Manning, or John Elway. That’s unicorns, right? You need a lot of money, lots of luck and obviously some picks to pick the guys in the top five. We weren’t there. To chase that unicorn right, let me run or take care of football, let me play defense. “The defense was still in the top 10, but I felt I missed that mark.”
