Three defensive players were injured during the Pittsburgh Steelers’ emotional win to start their season.
Two former Ravens, DeShon Elliot (knee), and Malik Harrison, a linebacker, also left the 34-32 victory over the New York Jets on Sunday.
The Steelers website reported that Head Coach Mike Tomlin stated that after the game, the injuries of Elliott and Harrison are “being evaluated” and that Porter’s hamstring was stopped to prevent it from worsening.
Justin Fields, a former Steelers quarterback who made his Jets debut, was unable to contain the Jets’ defense. Fields injured the Steelers both with his arm (16 of 22, 218 yard, one touchdown), and his legs (48 yards running, two touchdowns).
Chris Boswell’s 60-yard field goals with 1:03 remaining was all it took for the Steelers. Tomlin said he was glad to be out of the game, but admitted there was still plenty of room for improvement.
Tomlin stated, “Our slip-up was evident in certain areas.” “We didn’t apply enough pressure to Justin.” “There were times when we didn’t do enough.”
Aaron Rodgers, however, was excellent in his Steelers debut. He threw four touchdown passes (22 of 30, 244 yards and no touchdowns), to exact revenge on the Jets organization, which had parted with him last year.
Rodgers told Brooke Pryor, ESPN.com : “There are probably people who didn’t believe I could still play.” It was good to show them that I can still play.”
In Week 2, the Steelers will face off against the Seattle Seahawks (0-1).
