Andrews explained that “we’re constantly working on new things and variations to keep the defence honest. This was a great scenario to use.”
“I thought the guys executed really well. We were just trying to be as versatile as possible in this package. It was a good play call. It was great to be in the endzone.”
Andrews, who is burly and relentless in high-pressure situations has taken the Ravens direct snaps for the last few seasons. Andrews has been successful in plowing straight forward, but the Ravens have put a twist on the traditional “tush-push” for the second week running.
Andrews snapped the ball and turned it as if to throw it to Lamar Jackson. This is exactly what he did on Sunday in Minnesota to get a crucial first down. Andrews, however, did a complete 180-degree turn and ran off the Ravens offensive line, keeping the ball himself.
The Browns’ defense was crashing the middle, as it should. Browns safety Ronnie Hickman bailed himself out of the game by pretending to be Derrick Henry’s lead blocker and following the fake throw to Jackson. Grant Delpit was caught so off-guard by the play, that Ricard had an easy time blocking him.
Ricard stated, “I don’t think he knew what he was doing by the time I caught up with him.” “I didn’t either.”
The Ravens added “Hurricane”, to their playbook, only this week. Ricard stated that they had only practiced the play a few times.
Todd Monken, the offensive coordinator, dialed up the intensity when the game was on the line. Andrews kept the same strategy he had chosen after observing the Browns’ defense across the line of the scrimmage.
Jackson said, “That was insane.” “I was celebrating all the time. The play was pretty good when we practiced it earlier in the week. “We only needed a few yards, but [Andrews] going for a touchdown was incredible.”
Charlie Kolar closed the edge as Ricard opened up one side. Andrews was left with a large hole through which to gallop. He accelerated, beating rookie Browns linebacker Carson Schwesinger into the end zone.
Andrews added, “I can kick up when needed.” It was great to be in the end zone for our team.
