After Sunday’s victory, Ravens offensive players made it clear that in the remaining six weeks of the year they must find their mojo. This is especially true as the schedule gets more difficult. The NFL is a week-to-week league, so no team has to apologize for their wins, despite the aesthetics.
Jonas Shaffer, of The Baltimore Banner, wrote that “there is value in the Ravens’ brand of football.” Just look at the rest. The Ravens are a team that continues to push forward as would-be Super Bowl candidates fall and pretenders emerge from the muck each week. Do they win pretty? No. Do they win comfortably? No, also not really.
The Ravens’ recent form has surprised many in the NFL. Which team has the second-best point differential since Week 8, when the Ravens broke a four game losing streak by beating the Chicago Bears? The Los Angeles Rams are widely considered the best NFL team. The New England Patriots (+44), who have won nine consecutive games, are not the answer. Seattle Seahawks (plus-50) or the New England Patriots (plus-44). You’ve guessed correctly. The Ravens are at plus-64. In that time, they never lost by less than seven points and won three games with a margin of at least 13.
The offense has struggled, but the defense and special teams are stepping up to the plate. They have given up less that 20 points in six consecutive games. The Ravens also win the turnover war and play with discipline.
The biggest play in the game was cornerback Marlon Hushprey’s forced turnover at the Ravens 2-yard line, when the Jets were threatening to get within three points of the Ravens with less than seven minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. The Ravens didn’t commit a single turnover.
Jordan Stout’s performance was arguably his best in a four-year career. He was tied with Sam Koch as the longest punt ever in the history of the franchise (74 yards), and had a long punt of 67 yards that went out-of-bounds at the five. Stout averaged 61,5 yards per punt. Tyler Loop, a rookie kicker, converted on all three field-goal attempts.
They’ve only won two of the five games they’ve recently won. Shaffer wrote that their turnover margin was plus-seven during this stretch, which is tied with the Rams as the best in the NFL. “Their penal margin is plus 129 yards. Even with a poor performance in Cleveland during Week 12, their special teams have a considerable advantage.
If the Ravens win the next three games, (versus the Cincinnati Bengals, at home; Steelers, at home; and Bengals, on the road), then a third consecutive AFC North championship may just be a formality. The New York Times’s playoff simulator says that if they had a 9-5 record, their chances of winning the division would increase from 88% to 98%. Dominant? Not yet. The Ravens have just enough talent to make it. “Being just good enough as a plan has worked pretty well so far.”
