Baltimore Ravens beat Cleveland Browns 23-16 on Sunday, despite several mistakes. Here are some instant reactions from the Baltimore Beatdown staff.
The Ravens have won badly for the second week in row. This one-possession win felt worse than last week’s. Baltimore trailed for most of the game because of sacks and turnovers. But their defense was strong on third downs and their side of field. Shedeur’s hype quickly died as he was under constant pressure in the second half from various blitz packages. However, the offense struggled again at the goal line and in the red zones (1-4). The Browns did not punish the Ravens’ mistakes because of the heroics displayed by Baltimore’s defence. The Ravens may be pleased to leave Cleveland with a.500 record, but the film reviews will be less enjoyable. Nikhil Mehta
The Ravens managed to win despite a performance everyone outside of the defense would like to forget. The win was important, even if it wasn’t beautiful. The Ravens are in a battle to secure a playoff position. They must overcome multiple penalties that were mind-numbing, lose the turnover battle and endure a difficult road divisional environment. Today’s performance showed that the Ravens are currently unable to perform at their best, but they have shown resilience with four consecutive wins.
Zach Orr’s ability to plan a number of unmarked blitzes helped the defense shut down the Browns in the second-half. It’s still a big concern that there was no four-man press. Lamar Jackson had a game that was arguably his worst since Todd Monken took over, yet the Ravens won. I don’t believe they will be able win games like this later in the season. Hopefully they can do it against the Jets. Mark Myers
The Ravens won their fourth consecutive game, achieving a record of.500 in the process. Zach Orr deserves credit for winning this game, even though it was against rookie quarterbacks. Orr’s blitzes clearly affected Shadeur Sanders, who was introduced to the game at the end of the first half. Todd Monken, who has been struggling to get his offense going in red-zone and short-yardage situations, once again came up with a great trick play in an important situation. Baltimore must fix their short-yardage problems if they want to make a serious run in the January playoffs. It is important for now that the Ravens keep their season alive by winning another game. The Ravens have one of the ugliest wins they’ve ever had. The Ravens’ offensive line was utterly overmatched by Myles Garret and the rest the Browns’ defense. Lamar Jackson also had a forgettable game and doesn’t have the same burst of elusiveness and speed that we saw at Buffalo in week 1. The Browns offense, however bad it was, made the Ravens’ defense look like the legendary 2000 unit. The Ravens have won their first five games and are now back at.500. However, there are many questions about this team. It’s the remarkable regression of their red-zone offensive from last season that is the main concern. Todd Monken is content to run up the middle, despite the fact that his offensive line cannot generate any push. Monken’s creative play-calling will be necessary to compensate for the guard issues. We saw this with the fake tush press that Mark Andrews did. – Stephen Bopst
Ugly, ugly, ugly. The Ravens won the game by playing two rookie quarterbacks that struggled to move ball. The defense did what was expected, and they hit both Gabriel and Sanders throughout the evening. On the other hand the offense was the most ugly unit of football this weekend. This team’s collapse inside the 20-yard mark is truly embarrassing. The Ravens should forfeit the game if this is their offensive line. This offense is truly ineffective despite Lamar Jackson, Derrick Henry and many other names. They have to figure out how. – Zach Canter
