Baltimore Ravens lose their second consecutive game in Week 14 to Pittsburgh Steelers, 27-22. This was another division rival playing at home. Here are the Baltimore Beatdown’s staff reactions to this game.
The Ravens’ season is in danger. The Ravens are now on the brink of a collapse after losing consecutive home games to divisional opponents. In the second half of the game, Ravens’ offense started to become more dynamic. However, they were unable to convert on high-stakes situations. The game’s most controversial moment came in the fourth quarter, when an Isaiah Likely touchdown that looked like a catch was overturned. Jim Nantz and Tony Romo both said that they didn’t understand what a “catch” was. There were other flags that were thrown throughout the game. One was on Travis Jones, which turned a Steelers’ field goal into touchdown. It’s a frustrating season for the Ravens, and they may have to win the rest of the game to reach the playoffs. — Stephen Bopst
The words are not coming to me. Early on, the Ravens did not do enough to attack. The Ravens’ defense was unable to hold up in the middle, allowing an anemic Pittsburgh offensive team to score 27 goals. The defense allowed multiple deep shots by an offense who hadn’t made one for weeks. Special teams made a number of mistakes. Pittsburgh missed extra points and penalties on several kickoffs and punts.
It still feels as if this game should have been won. Late in the game, a touchdown was stolen from them. Isaiah Likely’s catch could have been the winning touchdown. The ball was in possession for several seconds, two feet down with the hands extended. The call was reversed, and it was ruled that the touchdown had not been scored. Add to that an interception which was reversed prior to that drive, and a phantom penality that was called against Travis Jones. This gave Pittsburgh a first-down, replacing a goal with a TD. The Ravens’ season is now on life support, and it doesn’t really matter if they make the playoffs.
This loss feels like it’s the end of the Ravens season. The Ravens’ hopes of winning AFC North or making the playoffs were severely damaged by back-to-back defeats to divisional opponents. Baltimore was certainly hurt by the suspect officiating, but it is still true that they put themselves into a hole from which they could not climb. The team lacks the offensive line and pass rush needed to be a serious contender in the playoffs, even if it somehow managed to back their way there. It is hard to imagine that the Super Bowl favorites will not make the playoffs if they miss the season. This is the best thing for the franchise’s future. Dustin Cox
Blame Lamar, the refs or the coaches. This team hasn’t played well for an entire game this year. The team has had a few good quarters, and even some halves. But almost all have come after the halftime. This team sleepwalks its way into a deficit in the first half. When they are desperately trying to catch-up in the second, margins become very thin. Each play and call is important. Do the refs have a history of making bad calls? 100%. The Ravens should not have been there in the first instance, just like their entire season. Nikhil Meta
