Baltimore Ravens linebacker Roquan Smith has been the cornerstone of the NFL’s top-ranked run defense this season. As the Ravens prepare to face the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Divisional Round, Smith is ready to take on the challenge of stopping Bills running back James Cook and the ground game that helped Buffalo dominate the Denver Broncos last weekend.
Smith, who leads a Ravens defense that allowed just 80.1 rushing yards per game this season, is laser-focused on executing their game plan.
“I think it’s gonna be very simple for us. We just gotta stick to who we are as a group,” Smith said on NFL Network.
Cook has been a key weapon for Buffalo, using his speed and agility to churn out big plays. Against Denver, he posted 120 yards on 23 carries, with backup Tyus Johnson adding 44 yards. The Bills controlled the game with 41 minutes of possession, tallying 26 first downs and wearing down the Broncos’ defense.
For Buffalo, replicating that success will be crucial in supporting quarterback Josh Allen and keeping Baltimore’s offense off the field.
The Ravens’ defense is built to counteract the Bills’ strengths. Smith has consistently delivered game-changing plays this season, from stopping rushers in the backfield to forcing turnovers. With his leadership, Baltimore’s front seven has been nearly impenetrable against the run.
One area where the Ravens could excel is forcing Buffalo into long third-down situations. Denver converted just two of nine third downs last week, allowing Buffalo to dictate the pace. If Baltimore can win on early downs, it could disrupt the Bills’ rhythm and put more pressure on Allen.
Roquan Smith and the Ravens defense aren’t intimidated by Buffalo’s rushing attack, and with their proven ability to stymie even the most potent ground games, they’re confident heading into Sunday’s clash. For the Bills, James Cook’s ability to produce against Baltimore’s elite front will likely determine how much success their offense can find.
