Roquan Smith, Ravens linebacker, was named AFC Defensive player of the week after his stellar performance on Sunday against the Browns.
Smith, like the Ravens’ defense as a whole, didn’t perform to his normal standards in Week 1. Smith, like the Ravens’ defense, rebounded in Week 2 with a vengeance, filling his stat sheet with 15 stops, three tackles-for-loss and two quarterback hits. One of these led to Nate Wiggins’ interception. Smith’s day was capped by a 63 yard fumble return touchdown, his first career.
On Sunday, the eight-year veteran achieved a number of milestones that highlight his impressive play:
Smith was named to the first team of All-Pros in 2024. However, early in the season, his impact wasn’t as great as it had been during his first two and a half years in Baltimore. This level of impact was evident on Sunday, even with rookie linebacker Teddye Buchanan, who made his first NFL start. Smith often seemed to be able to predict the exact Browns run call. He would signal pre-snap, and then rush through traffic in order to get to the ball. Smith caught running backs even when Cleveland’s blocking players got to him.
He also made improvements in two areas that were evident in Buffalo, including a better depth of his zone drops as well as a more consistent and rapid tackling after the reception. Smith’s athleticism has also been questioned as he approaches 30 years of age, but on his 63 yard scoop-and score he looked just as fast as before.
Baltimore’s defence can only be as good as Smith when he is at his best. This was the case against the Browns on Sunday, but they will be facing a much tougher test on Monday when the Lions visit Baltimore.
