Report: Ravens TE Isaiah Likely to play Week 4 vs. Chiefs

Likely broke his foot during training camp, which required surgery. The Ravens decided not to place him on injured reserves in hopes that he’d be ready to play by the end of the first quarter. Likely, if he had been placed on injured reserve, would not have been able to practice until Week 4. Instead, he ramped up his participation over the past two weeks, allowing him to be ready to play Sunday. He has been officially classified as questionable.

Baltimore’s offensive hasn’t struggled without Likely. The unit was leading the league with the most points per game and the second most yards per play entering Week 4. The fourth-year tightend could still be a key contributor in two ways.

Likely, on the other hand, is a much more dynamic receiver than Charlie Kolar. Kolar hasn’t been able to step up in his absence as a passer-catcher. Likely’s ability to catch a contested pass and his chemistry with Lamar Jackson would be especially useful when Jackson has to throw the ball away, as was the case against the Lions.

Likely’s ability to block in space and in tight quarters, in particular, will help the Ravens’ rushing attack, which has been muted in their last two games. Jackson has shown he can be effective against the Chiefs on the ground in the past. Likely is known for making some of the best blocks when leading his quarterback.

Likely will likely be kept on a snap-count by the Ravens on Sunday. However, he may be ready to take on a full workload following two weeks of training. It still seems like a cautious approach is the best move here. If Likely feels (and looks) good in first half, then he may see more snaps and provide a spark to the offense in the second.
