Ravens Week 12 Report Card: Another sluggish win

Quarterback: C-

Lamar Jackson failed to throw a touchdown for the second consecutive game. He completed less than 60% (13-for-23) of his throws and ran on the ground for fewer than 13 yards. Jackson threw only 153 yards, and his passer rating was 76.9. The two-time MVP had another inconsistent performance. He hasn’t looked like himself since his first return from injury, a few weeks back. In the second half, he began to gain momentum as the Ravens started to move the football better and finish drives with scores. Jackson did not make a single turnover in the first half, which was important, as it was a tight-knit and low-scoring game. In this game his accuracy fluctuated and he appeared to be less athletic than usual. His overthrow of Deandre Hopkins to the end zone was a highlight. Jackson will have to return to his best form as quickly as possible for the Ravens to be able to improve their offensive game.

Running back: C-

The Ravens struggled to gain ground against the Jets’ aggressive defensive line. The Ravens were held to 98 total rushing yards on just 34 carries (2.9% per carry). Derrick Henry was fed by the Ravens, but only managed 64 yards on 21 attempts. Henry’s other 20 runs would have been 47 yards if you took out his longest run, which was 17 yards. Henry scored both Ravens offensive touchdowns in the red-zone, and also caught two passes totaling 24 yards. Keaton Mitchel’s long breakaway run was called back due to a holding violation and he only had two carries totaling 10 yards.

Wide Receiver: C

Zay Flowers was able to catch five of the six passes that were thrown at him for 58 yard with a 20-yard long reception. This was his lowest yardage since Week 6. Flowers gained an extra 11 yards in rushing, but at times he appears to be wasting some yards by using juke and cutback moves rather than running straight ahead. Devontez Walks’ 30-yard catch in the second-half gave the Ravens an explosive play they desperately needed. Deandre Hopkins also had two modest catches, but he did manage 13 yards. He was also overthrown when he tried to score after a great move that allowed him to open up against single coverage.

Tight end: D+

The Ravens tight ends had a very small impact on a day with fewer passes. Isaiah Likely was targeted three times and Mark Andrews twice, but both only caught one pass, for 10 yards and 9 yards respectively. Jackson and his tight end were not on the exact same page with a couple of third down throws in the early game. Andrews, who was in the endzone and targeted by the defenders, let a pass slip from his hands. It may have been punched away by another defender if he had been able reel it in. Charlie Kolar wasn’t targeted and neither he, Pat Ricard or Likely, nor Andrews had a noticeable impact on run or pass blocking.

Offensive line: D+

The Ravens offensive line only allowed one sack, and just one quarterback hit, which is a significant improvement over previous weeks. Jackson was under some pressure, but the Ravens allowed a few pressures and hurries. The Ravens’ ground game was also disappointing. A measly 2.9 yard per carry and less than 100 yards is not what the Ravens require offensively. This is especially true when Jackson and the passing game are in a slump. Jackson and the backs had trouble finding running lanes as they were repeatedly beaten off of blocks by the offensive line in short yardage situations. The Ravens five-man offensive line continues to be too disorganized with a lack rhythm and consistency.

Defensive line: C+

The Ravens held the Jets to just 44 yards (2.8 yards per carry), with the longest run being only nine yards. The Jets gained 78 yardage by running 26 times. Travis Jones had five tackles, including a tackle-for-loss. Taven Bryan also contributed a half sack and tackle-for loss. Other than tackles, no other defensive lineman was included in the stat sheet. Baltimore failed to apply much pressure through the interior on Tyrod Taylor, which could have been beneficial. The defensive front put in a solid, but not spectacular performance.

Edge Rusher B

Dre’Mont Jones is a solid player since the Ravens acquired at the trade deadline. This was his best performance yet with the team. Jones had 1.5 sacks and two tackles for losses, as well as a pass breakup and two quarterback hits. This was his third consecutive game with two of these. Mike Green had an equally productive afternoon, with a stat line that was well-rounded (sack, tackles for loss, and two quarterback hits). Together, these two players combined for nine tackles. Kyle Van Noy also had a quarterback’s hit on Taylor. Taylor’s production was solid but he had more time than he should have to throw. He managed to complete 10 first-down passes and throw for 222 yard.

Linebacker: B-

The Ravens were unable to stop ball carriers in the open spaces at times. However, they did play a role in containing Hall and the Jets rushing attack. Teddye Buchanan and Roquan Buchanan both finished with eight tackles. Trenton Simpson – who has been used as a pseudo-edge rusher for the past few weeks – did not have a significant impact on pass rushing but did add two tackles.

Cornerback B

Marlon Humphrey’s forced fumble of Hall in the fourth-quarter quarter was arguably the most important play. This happened at the Jets’ two-yard line, and it prevented them from scoring. The Jets were unable to score and the game was decided by one possession late. John Metchie III was the only Ravens wide receiver that had a consistent problem covering him. He caught six passes with 65 yards and a touchdown. Nate Wiggins let an interception slip from his grasp in the opening plays, but T.J. Tampa picked off Taylor late in the fourth-quarter to end the game. Hall was the Jets’ main receiver, and the Ravens’ cornerbacks were mostly solid in their coverage.

Safety: C+

Alohi Gillman’s performance was not his best with only one tackle. He gave up a touchdown on a one-on-1 coverage early in game, and missed an important tackle in the second quarter of Hall’s 40-yard catch and run. Malaki Starks left a few tackles as well. Kyle Hamilton, despite a few injuries in the game, managed to make 10 tackles. He was also involved with the ball on a regular basis.
