Ravens want to sign Lamar Jackson before free agency begins

The Ravens plan to enter contract negotiations again with quarterback Lamar Jackson this offseason.

Jackson signed a reported five-year contract worth $260 million dollars before the season of 2023, which would have kept him on contract until 2027.

If the Ravens do not extend Jackson’s contract, it will be harder to build a team around him.

According To OvertheCap.com Jackson’s salary cap will jump from $43.5 Million last year to $74.5 millions in 2026 and 2020. Jackson’s salary would be 24% of Ravens’ projected salary cap space.

The General Manager Eric DeCosta stated on Tuesday that a contract extension with Jackson “certainly gives us more flexibility” in terms of roster building.

DeCosta stated that “we do have a little nest egg, but it’s less than we would like.” “A deal would allow us to be more proactive in re-signing, likely more players to the team and possibly go after some big-ticket items.”

DeCosta stated that negotiations with Jackson are “ongoing” in August.

Steve Bisciotti, Ravens owner, said on Tuesday that he wanted Jackson to be the team’s QB.

Bisciotti stated, “We want a second window and Lamar is aware of that.” “I believe he’s willing to do something similar to the last deal he signed, even though the annual amount will be higher. But I hope that it will be as simple as plugging in your number into the same contract [he signed in 2023] and moving on.

I told Lamar that this was important to me, because we have free agents and I didn’t want that to be a burden on our shoulders as we enter free agency. I told Lamar that, and he seemed to be very appreciative. I hope he’s willing to work with Eric to avoid a repeat of the previous situation.
