On the ability to bounce back from disappointing losses, like the Bills’ in Week 1, “I believe it all starts with having the right people. We have the right people. We are doing a great job of finding the right people to join us. They love football, they want to work hard, they care about their teammates and want to perform on stage. They want to be at the center of everything. When you’re in a position of leadership, you recognize an opportunity such as this. We had a hard loss. How am I going respond to this situation? How I respond will set the tone of who I am in the future. It’s an opportunity to make a difference in a new way. I think that our guys are doing a great job at it.”
How to balance consistency and evolution: You’re always growing, because you should always know more tomorrow than what you do today. You are growing in this sense. It’s also important to note that certain principles are indestructible. These things won’t change. These are the things we’re built on. These are the foundations. These are obvious truths about football or life. They are just true. We’re not going to lose these values. You must keep moving. This is constantly changing. This is a strategy. This is an operation of high level. The people are intelligent. You cannot live in the same universe. You can’t play the same plays. You cannot run the same blitzes. You cannot run the same coverages. You can’t have the same kickoff returns. You have to find new ways to surprise people, keep things moving and to do something different. If we don’t, or if a coach lives by one system, and says, “This is what I’m doing, and everything has to fit into what I’m doing, eventually people will overtake us and you’ll lose ground.”
On the fact that his desire to coach is still strong after 18 seasons: Let’s start with that. You have the chance to experience a full day, and what could be better than that? “My dad says to me, “Attack today with an excitement unknown to mankind.”
