Ravens vs Lions, The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

The Ravens were humiliated in a 38-30 defeat to the Detroit Lions, which looks closer than it was. Let’s start with the ugly.

Mark Andrews It was a slow season start for Andrews. He spent his first two games blocking off his butt, and only had two catches to show. He went 6-6 today, gaining 91 yards and 2 touchdowns. Andrews should return soon. However, his return will allow the Ravens to work him into their offense until he is 100%.

Nate Wiggins Wiggins is the best defensive player in the team. Wiggins is the best defensive player on the team. Others may have played louder and more flashy, but Wiggins continues to be steady. Although it’s just game three of year two, I am excited to see what he can do. I’m ready to give him a contract extension.

Rashod BatemanLike Andrews Bateman had a quiet year to start, but on Monday he came into his own with 63 yard and his first touchdown. Bateman was the second highest scorer on the team last year with nine touchdowns. Jackson has made him one of his favorite red zone targets. He’s a great target for Jackson, and he can create separation to find easy targets.

Jordan Stout :Stout has the best season of his career. Stout’s kicks were so accurate that the Ravens’ defense had to cover multiple fields, but they failed. Stout’s contract will be extended if this trend continues.

Lamar Jackson :Slow Down with your comments. I can see them already flying. Jackson wasn’t bad. If you only look at the box scores, it appears that Jackson had another great game. Anyone could tell that the two-time MVP was not himself tonight. It didn’t seem right. I’m not sure if it’s an injury that is preventing him from moving as well as usual, but it looked off. He was sacked seven times! Jackson did not do himself any favours. He took seven(!) He was too slow to throw the ball and didn’t make a decision on whether he should run or break out for more yards. He was caught on the line several times after deciding to run too late when he couldn’t find a receiver to throw to. Jackson would likely say that he had a bad game and blame himself for many of the negative plays. I don’t think it will be an issue.

The coordinators Both Monken and Orr have made some bizarre, confusing calls tonight. Monken has been struggling to punch in the ball at the goal line on several occasions. Orr’s defense was utterly pitiful for allowing multiple drives of 95+ yards to end in touchdowns. They need to go back into the lab and work it out.

Tyler Loop Loop looks like a kicker for the future. He appears calm and confident, adding three extra points or extra points when asked. I’d bet a lot of money that he will hit a 60+ yard field-goal in a crucial situation this year. He looks good. He’s obviously having problems with kickoffs and new rules. He is the leader in the league for illegal kicks with four. It’s not working. I don’t even know how much is his doing and how much is planned. Why give the opposition any additional help when this defense is already struggling?

The offensive: It’s awful. Early count says they surrendered 30 pressures. 30. It doesn’t really matter that they were slow burns, which gave Jackson plenty of time to throw. This is a number that’s simply unforgivable. Harbaugh has been hounding the media and fans about Daniel Faalele since a long time. This issue can’t be dismissed with “well, he will be a great player”. Right now, both guards are restricting this team. It’s now time to mix in Cleveland, Bullock and anyone else until they find something that sticks. This is a terrible situation to place an MVP quarterback in. Jackson would be just like Joe Burrow, a division rival, who is injured and on the sidelines.

The Defense:I could list all the names and sections, but that would take up so much room, I’d have to crash the page. Let’s cover everything in one post. Marlon Hustrey was burned on all sides tonight. Without Nnamdi madubuike, the interior line was a mess. Impact from the sides was non-existent. Roquan returned to his old shell after an impressive performance last week. The highest paid safety in the NFL made no impact tonight. The Ravens are a team that has been unable to make any turnovers in the two games they have played this season against strong offenses. The Ravens’ pass rush failed to sack one of the league’s least mobile quarterbacks, while the run defense allowed touchdown drives of up to 96 and even 98 yards.

This unit is soft and pathetic. It’s an embarrassment for the sport of football. The game was played in front of primetime in all-black uniforms. It’s embarrassing. It’s going to take a lot more work, possibly a few trades, and maybe even a change in play-caller. It’s bad at the moment.

Derrick Henry fumble issue:Where did this come? He was one of the most reliable ball carriers in his career. Then, all of a suddenly, he has three fumbles within three games. Two of the fumbles occurred in late, tight fourth-quarter situations, which flipped the game. If it had not been recovered, the third would have changed the momentum of the Browns’ game. It’s ugly and needs to be corrected. I don’t even know what it is. Yesterday.

Keaton Mitchel scratches:Look me, and tell me that this team could not use him? They’ve scored points in every game, but their last two games have been a struggle on offense. Derrick Henry gained 36 yards in the first drive. He had 14 yards for the remainder of the game. Mitchell could not have helped, tell me? Justice Hill was a star in 2024 but has zero rushing yards and only four catches this season for 21 yards. Mitchell could not add some explosions, tell me? Mitchell is a great back, and I like all of the players on this team. But for a team that has a struggling offensive line, and backs who haven’t produced for two consecutive games, Mitchell could add some spark. He must be present on game day.

John Harbaugh :Oh boy! Here we go. I asked the Ravens replace Harbaugh before he went to Seattle with Mike Macdonald. After Macdonald left and was no longer an alternative, I let go. I said that firing Harbaugh would be a waste of time, a mistaken overreaction and merely a bandage to cover up mistakes made by players. You would trust who to hire, and then win the same 60+% of games that Harbaugh won in his career. This is how I feel a lot of the time. Take a look at the majority of new head coaches who have been hired. Either it hasn’t worked or rhythm is still being found. Dan Quinn was the most recent hire to have immediate success. It was also one of the less talked about hirings at the time. The flashy moves have not worked.

This loss has me a little riled up. Harbaugh embarrassed his team on primetime, at home, in a game-style event, with special uniforms and performances. Harbaugh has never had a moment as memorable as this. He’s defending an offensive line that looks like it’s lost. The pride in Baltimore’s defense has basically been wiped out since Macdonald left. This loss is just the latest example.

He won’t be fired and I don’t want him to. We’ve had the Lamar Jackson window too long and there isn’t much to show for it. In seven years, we’ve only had one conference championship and zero Super Bowls with a quarterback who was MVP. Macdonald’s departure, in my opinion, has made it too late to make a change. Jackson’s window is shrinking, game by match, month by monthly, season by seasons. It would be a disaster for the city of Baltimore and disrespectful of Lamar Jackson’s greatness. Harbaugh has himself said that he wants Jackson remembered as one of the greatest players of all time. John Harbaugh would be responsible for the outcome.
