Ravens trade Odafe Oweh with Los Angeles Chargers

The Ravens are making a bold move after a season-opening 1-4 record, during which they have allowed a league high 177 points per game (35.4).

Oweh, a Ravens first round pick in 2021 and the second most sacks on the team last season, posted a 10-sack career high. Baltimore has picked up Oweh’s fifth-year contract option, which comes with a salary cap of $13,25 million, for the upcoming offseason in the hopes that Oweh will have a breakout season that is yet to come.

Oweh was getting fewer snaps from Baltimore’s outside linebacker Tavius, who had 10 tackles and zero sacks in the first five games of this season. Oweh played 45% snaps this season while Robinson played 70%.

The Ravens are without Oweh: Robinson, Kyle Van Noy and rookie second-rounder Mike Green. David Ojabo is also an outside linebacker. Adisa Isaac, a second-year linebacker who has a dislocated arm and is currently on the injured reserve list, is expected to make a return this season.

Baltimore’s defensive secondary is weakened, as Kyle Hamilton has a groin problem that kept him out of the Ravens’ lopsided defeat to the Houston Texans. Hamilton’s return to Sunday’s Los Angeles Rams game is still uncertain.

The Ravens will want to make sure that Hamilton can be used in a variety of ways, even when he returns to the field. This will maximize his versatility. Baltimore’s use of safety Ar’Darius Washington has been limited since his Achilles injury in May.

Gilman, 28 years old, spent six years with the Chargers. He has started every game this season and made 22 tackles with three passes intercepted. He was drafted in the sixth round of 2020 out of Notre Dame and Navy. In Los Angeles, he started every game for three consecutive seasons.

Gilman is a 200-pound, 5-foot-10 safety. He has been praised for his tackling during his six seasons as a Charger. Gilman has made 252 tackles, 21 passes defended, and five interceptions in his six NFL seasons. Ravens safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson was added to the Ravens’ practice squad on Tuesday.

Oweh is one of many Ravens players who were due to become free agents this offseason. General Manager Eric DeCosta made it clear that Baltimore wouldn’t be able retain all of them, so he received trade compensation as well as help in the secondary. According to reports, the Ravens also saved $8 million in salary cap for this year.

The reported deal is between two organizations with many connections. It’s Harbaugh, DeCosta and Joe Hortiz, former Ravens executive in the front office.
