Ravens snap count analysis, Week 8: Ricard debuts, heavy safety is in the win

Tyler Huntley replaced Cooper Rush as Lamar Jackson’s primary backup. After the bye week, the Ravens’ offensive line was unchanged. All 62 snaps were played up front. Ronnie Stanley briefly left the field late in game, but still received 100% of snaps.

Derrick Henry led the way in the backfield with 36 snaps (58%) followed by Justice Hill (19 snaps) and Keaton Mitchel (7 snaps). Mitchell’s snap total was his highest so far this season. He also rushed for 43 yard on four carries, which is his best yardage of the year. Pat Ricard made his long-awaited debut in the season with 14 snaps that were impactful. He was a strong blocking force as usual.

The tight end snaps were again evenly distributed. All three members of the team played 25+ snaps. Mark Andrews, who played 37 snaps (60%) caught three passes. Isaiah Likely (36 Snaps) and Charlie Kolar (25) also combined to catch three passes. Kolar scored the Ravens’ only touchdown on the receiving side of the ball.

Zay Flowers, Huntley’s top target, had nine targets and a high snap count of 59 out of 62 snaps. Flowers caught seven passes totaling 63 yards. Rashod Bateman was second with two catches for 51 yards and a 79% share of snaps. Deandre Hopkins’ playing time increased slightly (23 snaps), but Tylan Wallace continued to see his time decrease. Wallace played only five offensive snaps.

Roquan returned from injury, and resumed playing every defensive snap. He played all 63 defensive snappes. Smith was the leading tackler in this game against his old team. Teddye Buchanan played 70% snaps despite a reduction in his action. Trenton Simpson was pushed back in the pecking-order by Smith’s return, who only played 10 snaps. Jake Hummel, a veteran player who played only one snap, made a tackle for loss that prevented a touchdown near the goal line.

The Ravens deployed three safety players at the same position behind the linebackers for the majority of the game. Kyle Hamilton played all snaps with more than half coming in the box. Alohi Gillman missed only one defensive snap while Malaki starks played 58 snaps. Starks was an every-down player for the Bears for the majority of the season, but he was removed from the field on a few occasions when they went heavy with the extra offensive lineman.

Jaire Alexander, the cornerback, was again a healthy scratch. Marlon Wiggins and Nate Wiggins each played 62 snaps. Wiggins recorded a huge interception in fourth quarter. Chidobe awuzie, another player returning from injury, played 20 snaps. The Ravens were relying heavily on their three-safety set, and no other cornerbacks received any snaps.

In this game, the Ravens only used three edge rushers: Mike Green (52 snapped), Kyle Van Noy (40% snaps) and David Ojabo (30% snaps). Green’s snap share of 83% was his highest in his rookie year and he recorded his first career sack. Travis Jones led the defensive linemen in snaps taken on the field with 45.
