Jordan Schultz of FOX Sports reports that the Baltimore Ravens have signed veteran edge rusher Carl Lawson.
Lawson was invited to work out with the Ravens this week. He impressed the team enough to be added to the practice squad. He will provide much-needed depth in an outside linebacker group that has only three players healthy on the active roster.
Lawson could be unavailable for Sunday’s Bears game, as he has only a few more days to master the new defense. Lawson, a seven-year veteran who has played mainly in 4-3 schemes during his career. The Ravens’ 3-4 scheme (and overall philosophy), however, has more varied responsibilities for the edge defenders.
Lawson wasn’t brought in just to rush the quarterback. The Ravens have only eight sacks through their first six games. Nnamdi madubuike, who suffered a season-ending knee injury in Week 2, is still tied with the team leader for two sacks.
Lawson had seven sacks in 2022 with the Jets, compared to five for the Cowboys the previous year. In 2023, he had no sacks due to a lingering training camp injury and was not emphasized as an edge rusher in New York. The information on his pressure and pass-rush win rate , provided by Pro Football Focus , does indicate that he is performing less as he approaches 30.
