Ravens’ safety Alohi Gilman is named AFC Defensive player of the Week

Baltimore Ravens safety Alohi Gilman has been named AFC Defensive Week 15 Player of the Week after an outstanding performance against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Gilman’s 85-yard touchdown was the highlight of his day. It came off Kyle Van Noy, an outside linebacker, who intercepted the ball. Van Noy intercepted the ball at the five-yard-line and passed it to Gilman, who ran the Bengals’ offense down for an 85-yard touchdown.

Gilman’s performance was consistent throughout the game. He made several tackles that were crushing and limited Cincinnati’s explosive play over the top. reports Pro Football Focus that Gilman also made three tackles and only allowed seven yards to his four targets.

Gilman is deserving of a lot of praise. In Week 6, Gilman’s addition stabilized the Ravens defensive backend and allowed Kyle Hamilton to move closer to the line-of-scrimmage. Both changes were very successful, as the unit turned around and produced several strong performances including Sunday’s.

Gilman and Ar’Darius Washington will both be eligible for free agency in the offseason. The Ravens, who already have Hamilton and Malaki starks as safety options, should realize that they need another player to join them. Washington’s injury history may make him less expensive, but Gilman earned only a two-year deal worth $10MM last offseason, despite having a career-high in 2023. Since the mid-level safety market was not particularly strong in either year, at least one player should be affordable to keep. Keeping both players is unlikely to be an option, given the Ravens cap situation.
