Ravens report card, week 6: Poor offensive performance leads to yet another defeat

Quarterback: D

Cooper Rush was again uninspired as he took the place of Lamar Jackson. Rush completed just 11-of-19 passes for 72 yards, before being replaced in the fourth quarter by Tyler Huntley. Rush’s early interception was costly, and he also fumbled a few other passes. Huntley’s addition to the offensive line gave it a boost, but they still failed to score. “Snoop”, who threw only 10 passes for 68 yards, completed 15 in garbage time. He scrambled for 39 yards, with a 19 yard pickup on fourth and long.

Running back: B+

Derrick Henry had his best performance against the Rams since Week 1, and the Ravens were able to find some consistency. Henry had a good workload of 24 carries, and ran for 122 yard despite only having a 12 yard longest run. He failed to convert a 4th and goal attempt from one yard outside the end zone just before halftime, but blocking in front him was blown on that play. Justice Hill ran six times for 16 yards, while catching five more passes for an additional 28 yards.

Wide Receiver: D+

Zay Flowers’ performance was forgettable. He had shoulder pain and his status for this game was uncertain. Flowers caught six passes, was overthrown a few times and had a high team average. However, his fumble in the third-quarter slowed down a possible game-tying drive. Two plays later, the Rams scored to give them a 14 point lead. Flowers bobbled a handoff end-around attempt on the following drive, leading to another costly fumble. Rashod bateman, who had only one catch this time around, was also a non-factor. Deandre Hopkins added two catches totaling 20 yards. On this day, no other wide receivers were targeted.

Tight end: C

Mark Andrews received six passes and only caught four of them. Andrews only gained 24 yards in the air. Andrews’ fellow tight ends had an even smaller impact. Charlie Kolar was unable to catch a single target, whereas Isaiah Likely had two receptions totaling six yards. The production of this group has been disappointing even though Jackson was at the center, and the offense had been more active in the early weeks. At least they appeared to do much better at run blocking.

Offensive line: C+

Henry had more room to run after the Ravens pushed up in front. It is impressive that the Ravens were able to run for 179 yard on 37 runs, with only one attempt going over 12 yards. This was a result of solid run blocking. Ronnie Stanley, the Ravens’ starting left tackle, was forced to leave the game early with an ankle injury. The Rams were able to rack up 11 quarterback hits and four sacks in the fourth quarter. The offensive line was not as bad in this game but the turnovers were.

Defensive line: B-

In this game, the Ravens played with just four defensive linemen. John Jenkins, 36, who stripped-sacked Matthew Stafford was the only notable play by the Ravens’ front-seven. The Ravens didn’t have much in the way of pass-rushing, but they did improve their defense against the run. As a whole, the Rams gained only 74 yards from 23 rushing attempts. Travis Jones only had one tackle, and no other stats. The Ravens’ defense performed admirably, despite their lack of talent and depth up front.

Edge Rusher C+

Unfortunately, another injury was the biggest story for Ravens edge rushers. Tavius Robinson left the game early due to a foot injury. He did not return. A group of undermanned players, who were already thin on the ground at this position held up against the run well but again did not provide much in terms pass rush. Edge rushers failed to record a single sack or even a quarterback hit. The Ravens are now down to a skeleton team of Kyle Van Noy and Mike Green. Odafe Oweh and Robinson have both left the team. Green has a tackle for loss but isn’t providing the impact many expected as a pass rusher.

Linebacker: B

Teddye Buchanan, Trenton Simpson and the rest of the starting linebacker group played a better game last week than they did in previous games. Buchanan had nine tackles and Simpson had a quarterback’s hit and a quarter-sack. The former recorded a tackle for loss and the latter a pass breakdown. Tlyer Higbee, a tight end from the Rams, had four catches of 40 yards for a touchdown. However, the Rams didn’t trample the Ravens in the middle.

Cornerback: B+

The Ravens cornerbacks were certainly helped by the fact that Puka Ncua left the game during the second quarter. He hardly returned to the field. The cornerbacks as a group played better without Nacua. Marlon Humphrey’s leaping pass breakup on the play where he was injured could have easily turned into an interception. The Ravens were able to contain Davante Adam, who only caught four passes on ten targets for a total of 39 yards. Los Angeles’ other wideouts did not catch more than three balls or gain greater than 23 yards in the air.

Safety: C+

Alohi Gillman joined Kyle Hamilton in the lineup. Gilman played several snaps as a three-safety. Gilman’s presence along with Malaki Starks allowed Hamilton to play closer to the line of scrimmage and wear the green dot. Gilman was third in the team for tackles, with seven. This group didn’t make many notable impact plays, but they did limit big plays in the air and provide good run support. Starks has had some ups and downs in his rookie year.

Special Team B

Tyler Loop made his only attempt at 37 yards after a disappointing performance last week. Jordan Stout punted the ball 53 yards in this game, resulting in a touchback. LaJontay Westerner’s punt-return game was the highlight of special teams. Wester, who had raced up the field 15 yards earlier in the second half, fumbled the return late in the quarter. Wester had a second opportunity to make the most of his first chance, but a Rams kicking penalty gave him a second shot. The rookie gained 35 yards on his second return and put the Ravens in a good position to score by halftime.
