Quarterback: B

Quarterback: B
Lamar Jackson had a good game in the air. The ball went into danger twice. Once when it was poked and once on a nearly intercepted throw. Jackson tried to buy some time on a failed play where he had no option on fourth-and goal on a right-side rollout. He ended the game with 288 yards passing and three touchdowns. 21 of 27 throws were completed. Despite the Ravens being two possessions behind, some of those yards came during the Ravens’ final drive, which included his third touchdown. Jackson struggled to avoid pressure and was often under duress, particularly in the second-half. He wound up being sacked seven times. Jackson should have scrambled more when the pass blocking failed, instead of waiting to see what happened downfield. He only rushed 35 yards in seven carries. Of those, 13 came from a single carry during the first quarter.
Running back: D+
Derrick Henry’s performance was better than the 23-yard run he had last week. He ran for 50 yards in total and scored a touchdown of 28 yards during the first quarter. He was quieter after the play, and his performance was largely controlled from that point on. Henry was stopped on three straight goal line runs during the second quarter. He then lost another fumble in the final quarter. Henry’s third and final fumble this season was in a crucial moment. It was also his second fumble on Ravens territory. It is not typical of the future Hall of Famer to be so careless with the ball, but this time it cost him. Justice Hill and Rasheen were not given any carries. The former only caught one pass, for four yards.
Wide Receiver: C+
Zay Flowers, who had a prominent role in weeks 1-2 of the season, was surprised to be iced out by Monday night. He only managed two catches totaling 13 yards from three targets. Rashod Bateman increased his target share while Zay Flowers’s decreased. Bateman’s best game this year was his five catches, 63 yards, and touchdown. The wide receivers’ room was quiet. DeVontez Walker caught a 34-yard pass to put the Ravens near the goalline. Deandre Hopkins was able to catch a 13-yard pass in the endzone and received a pass interference.
Tight end: B+
Mark Andrews, who had been a non-factor for the past two weeks in the passing game, and Charlie Kolar both played a bigger role in Week 3 after being non-factors in that area. Andrews led the team in the air. He caught all five of his targets, totaling 64 yards. In the third quarter, Andrews scored a touchdown after a 14 yard catch. Andrews had already caught a jump ball contested by safety Brian Branch before that touchdown catch in the endzone. Kolar was able to move the chains by catching two passes and gaining 22 yards. Pat Ricard is still a huge loss to the Ravens, both as a run and pass blocker.
Offensive line: D+
As the game progressed, the Ravens’ offensive line began to struggle. The Ravens started off the game well, allowing Henry to run and Jackson to throw. The rushing attack was less effective after the first two drives. Henry’s rushing attempts were stuffed near the line-of-scrimmage a few times. In the second half, the Lions defensive front started to apply pressure more consistently and Jackson was sacked seven times by seven quarterback hits. Aidan Hutchinson was able to get free in the fourth-quarter and poke the ball from Henry. Jackson may have held the ball for too long at times, but the pocket has collapsed many times very early on in the play.
Defensive line: D+
The Ravens’ defensive line looked strong at the start of the game without Nnamdi (neck) Madubuike in the middle. The Ravens held the Lions’ rushing attack to just 12 yards in their first seven attempts. The Lions’ rushing attack started to wear down the Lions as the game progressed. David Montgomery was particularly unstoppable, as he rushed for 151 yard on 12 carries. He had multiple runs of at least 10 yards and a 72-yarder in the second halves. The Ravens limited Jahmyr to a poor 3.0 yards per run, but the Lions still managed 224 yards on 38 carries and four touchdowns. The Ravens had little pressure in the middle of the field during the passing game. Only one defensive lineman had a quarterback hit or tackle for loss. The Ravens defensive interior had trouble getting off blocks.
Edge Rusher D+
The early results of missing Kyle Van Noy in the edge rusher room were also not good. The Ravens had to put pressure on Jared Goff in order to disrupt the Lions offensive plan and force a turnover. The Ravens did not have a single edge rusher who had a sack. Mike Green and Odafe Oweh were the only ones to hit Goff more than once during the night. The Ravens were able limit Gibbs’ explosive runs along the edge, but struggled to keep from being gashed in the middle when they tried to crash inside.
Linebacker: C-
Linebacker’s room continues to show the same negative trend. The Ravens linebackers did not perform as well in this game, one week after Roquan’s impressive performance and Teddye Buchanan’s promising trend. Buchnan played extended snaps opposite Smith again and finished with eight tackles. Smith had a tackle for loss and a quarterback hit. The Ravens allowed too many long runs in the middle of their defense, and they missed tackles when there was space. Moreover, the Ravens’ coverage in the middle of field could be an issue.
Cornerback: C+
Marlon Hushprey’s performance was forgettable as he struggled to cover Amon-Ra St. Brown one-on-1. St. Brown beat Humphrey to a long touchdown, and then converted another long fourth down late in the 4th quarter. Humphrey was suffering from a groin problem, which he seemed to have aggravated at one point, when he played this game. St. Brown, too, is one of the best wide receivers in the league. The rest of the Lions wide receivers did not do much damage. Jameson Williams made two big catches in the first drive, but after that he did not catch another ball. Detroit’s other wideouts only had one catch for four yards all night. Nate Wiggins made another pass breakup impressive in the fourth-quarter and T.J. Tampa had a few strong tackles on open fields.
Safety: C+
Kyle Hamilton was the Ravens’ top tackler with nine, but had no tackles for loss or pass breaks. The All-Pro Safety was not as impressive as usual, but he did make no mistakes. Malaki Starks made a tackle for loss but appeared to miss several tackles and allow a few catches. When the opposition has multiple runs of more than 10 yards, including one of 72 yards, the final line and backend defense must be held responsible.
Special Team: B+
Jordan Stout continued his strong start in the season with two punts, each of which was 63 or 56 yards. Both of these punts pinned the Lions within five yards of their own line. Tyler Loop missed a 41 yard field goal by a hair and made errant short kickoffs. He scored all three extras. Jake Hummel, a linebacker, nearly blocked a kick but was penalized for holding. Rasheen Ali returned four kickoffs for a total of 105 yards.
