Baltimore Ravens released undrafted rookie safety Reuben Lowery before Sunday’s game against the Rams. This opened up a spot for nose tackle C.J. Okoye.
For Sunday’s match, the Ravens have also promoted quarterback Tyler Huntley from the practice squad and safety Keondre. Huntley will be Cooper Rush’s backup, while Jackson will play on special teams.
Okoye, a Ravens defensive lineman who was injured in the Ravens last two games, was promoted from the Ravens practice squad. He couldn’t use his 6-foot-6 frame and 370-pound weight to create big plays, but he was effective in the trenches. The Ravens have quietly made it a priority to develop young players in preparation for the years 2026 and beyond. Okoye could be one of those who will play a larger role in the future.
Lowery faced a difficult situation in his first start of the season against the Texans during Week 5. Lowery filled in for the injured Kyle Hamilton. He gave up two touchdowns while covering, but his performance is hard to criticize when compared with the Ravens’ entire secondary.
Lowery could stay on the Baltimore practice squad, if he is not claimed on waivers. This seems likely after last week’s struggles. It is too early to write off a rookie safety who has made a good impression in the spring and summer.
Lowery was kept on the Ravens’ active roster, but it is reasonable to ask why they did not use Okoye’s third practice squad promotion. Lowery is limited to kick coverages or returns, while Jackson can play a part in every special team unit. Jackson was originally on the Ravens active roster because of his defensive contributions. However, with Alohi Gillman now as their third safety, Jackson is more valuable to the Ravens on gameday.
