Ravens mailbag: Will Ravens change the guards?

Mink The Ravens tried out a new left guard. The Ravens gave Emery Jones Jr. the chance to play at left guard during Thanksgiving’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals. Jones took 16 snaps as part of a rotating rotation with Andrew Vorhees.

After reviewing the tape, they determined that Jones had not played better than Vorhees and Daniel Faalele at right guard. John Harbaugh, the head coach of the Ravens, said Jones performed “OK.”

Harbaugh stated on Monday that “it wasn’t any better than the two other guys in [his] very first game. He didn’t even outplay them.” “You have to go in with the players you think are the best and meet them where they are at.

“That doesn’t mean he won’t be given more time in the coming week based on how things go at practice, or how players are doing with their health, and other such factors, but this is where we were.” Emery is doing well. He’s doing great; I love his current situation. I believe he would compete with a fervor and play well if he were to go out there. I’d trust him to play well. You couldn’t even say that it was the same or better based on his performance.

Pro Football Focus (PFF), which grades players, confirms Harbaugh’s assessment. Faalele scored 72.9 against the Bengals. Vorhees received a grade of 63.3. Jones earned a score of 47.9.

Jones played his first career game, and it’s clear that he will improve with time. Harbaugh also said that it could happen again this week when the Bengals play.

The Ravens, however, are not in an experimental mode. The Ravens are not going to put Jones in the lineup and then say “Let’s just see what happens.” The team will decide who to play based on their observations in both games and practices. Maybe veteran practice squad member Laken Tomlinson will become a factor. He’s more likely to be a depth replacement, as Ben Cleveland is suspended.

Both guard positions can be improved. Both the good and bad moments were there against the Steelers. The Ravens feel that Vorhees Faalele is the best combination they have. To replace them, someone will have to play better than they do.
