Ravens lose a safety from the practice squad and another on waivers

The Ravens lost their two safety players on Monday. Reuben Lowery was claimed by the Colts off waivers, and J.T. Gray was promoted from the practice squad. Gray was removed from the practice squad.

Lowery was named to Baltimore’s 53 man roster as an undrafted freshman after a good showing in spring practice and a solid preseason performance. He was only active for a few snaps on two occasions in the first four weeks. Lowery took over for an injured Kyle Hamilton during Week 5. He allowed five catches out of six targets including two touchdowns.

The Ravens have acquired veteran C.J. Last week, the Ravens acquired Alohi Gillman and Gardner-Johnson, which indicated that Lowery was not likely to be included in their future safety plans. His regular season special teams contributions are limited to kick returns and coverages. He was therefore waived as part of Baltimore’s Week 6 roster changes on Saturday.

Baltimore might have retained Lowery as a member of their practice squad, after he was able to defeat 2024 UDFA Beau Brade in the training camp for a roster position. The Ravens did not have a need for him, but they’ve developed many unheralded and undersized defensivebacks into rotational players. Lowery’s next step will be to try and make an impact in Indianapolis, where he is likely to compete with Trey Washington, another undrafted rookie safety.

Gray was cut from the Saints’ roster before the start of the regular season. The Ravens swooped quickly to fill the void. John Harbaugh said that the veteran special team ace could contribute immediately, but he wasn’t elevated from the practice roster for Weeks 1 and 2. Gray was placed on injured reserve for the practice squad and didn’t return to the field until he was picked up by the Broncos.

Gray will reunite in Denver with his former coaches, Sean Payton, and Darren Rizzi as the special teams coordinator. Both were his coaches when he was at New Orleans. As soon as Gray is healthy, he will take on a key special teams role.
