Ravens interview former Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel

According to a team statement , the Baltimore Ravens interviewed Mike McDaniel, former head coach of the Miami Dolphins for their vacant head coaching position on Thursday.

McDaniel was the hot seat during the 2025 season. However, all reports suggested that he would remain for an additional year. McDaniel was relieved of his duties by Dolphins owner Stephen Ross, but he still became one of the most sought-after offensive coaches in the market. He’s already attracted interest from several teams, and will probably land a job as an offensive coordinator by the end cycle.

McDaniel started his coaching career in Denver as an intern for Mike Shanahan. McDaniel spent most of the next fifteen years working under Kyle Shanahan. He also worked in Washington, with an infamous staff that included Kevin O’Connell, Sean McVay and others. Shanahan also had him work in Houston, Atlanta and San Francisco.

McDaniel spent years as an assistant coach and wide receivers’ coach before being named 49ers run-game coordinator. He held this position for four years, then was promoted to offensive coordinator in the year 2021. After a disappointing 2020 season, he revitalized his unit and helped him land the Miami head coaching job.

McDaniel was hired by the Dolphins after the controversial tenure Brian Flores, another candidate to fill the Ravens’ vacant position. McDaniel quickly implemented a motion-heavy system that made it easier for Tua Tagovailoa to throw and read the ball, while also releasing Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Wade as the wide receivers of his team.

Miami ended a five-year postseason drought in McDaniel’s first season as a wildcard 9-8 and improved to an 11-6 record in 2023. The Dolphins were the best offense in the league that year but haven’t been able recapture their magic. McDaniel was not completely fired – they went 8-9 in 2008 and 7-10 the following year – but his grip on the job was loosening. The Dolphins relieved McDaniel a few days after the end of the season, and shortly after John Harbaugh was fired.

McDaniel has been considered for several head coaching vacancies in the league as well as a couple of OC jobs. The Ravens may consider McDaniel for an OC position under their new coach. However, he could have already accepted another job.
