Ravens interview Broncos Vance Joseph DC for the head coaching position

On Thursday, the Baltimore Ravens interviewed Denver Broncos defense coordinator Vance Joseph to fill their vacant head coaching position.

Joseph, 53, has been with the Broncos for two years. Joseph was hired in 2017 as the Broncos’ head coach, but was fired two years later after a pair of seasons that saw double-digit losses. Joseph returned to Denver in 2023 after four years of solid results in Arizona and a short stint as interim coach.

Joseph’s return to the Broncos was not a success. Joseph transformed the defense from one of the NFL’s worst in 2023 to one of its best. Denver’s defense has been dominant and helped propel the team into the playoffs each of the past two years. They ranked second in total defense and third in points allowed this year.

Joseph’s team also led the league in sacks with 68 during the regular season. The Falcons are in second place with 57. The Ravens are at the opposite end of the spectrum, with only 30. Joseph’s presence is appealing, both to maximize individual player performance and to plan pressure. The success of the team and the development of edge rushers Nik Bonitto, Jonathan Cooper were hallmarks of his tenure in Denver. Joseph’s arrival markedly improved both edge rushers. Baltimore hasn’t gotten the best out of its young edge rushers over the last few years, despite investing heavily in this position in the draft. Joseph might be able to help.
