Detroit Lions ran over Baltimore Ravens defense, sacking Lamar Jackson 7 times. The score was 38-30 but the victory was much more lopsided.
With the loss, the Ravens fall to 1-2 and are currently ranked third in the AFC North.
Baltimore’s offense, with the exception of two pre-planned drives at the beginning of each half, never managed to find their feet against the Lions’ physicality in defense. They made a number of mistakes that were familiar. They failed to score again when they were faced with first-and goal from within the five-yard-line. Derrick Henry has fumbled again in a critical moment. The Ravens have taken their best player, one of the best in the league, off the field when the game was on the line.
Zay Flowers’ dynamic downfield threat was gone, as he was limited to only two catches totaling 13 yards. Henry’s love of big gains and touchdowns is gone. He averaged only 2.0 yards per carry, with his 28-yard longest run being the exception. Mark Andrews, Rashod bateman and others played their best games this year but failed to make the right play in the fourth quarter.
The defensive end of the game was even worse. In the first half the Ravens were able to force two punts due to their uncanny ability at destroying screens. But the Lions responded with an 18-play 98-yard touchdown run that clearly showed which team had the upper hand. Detroit’s offensive was tearing holes in the Baltimore front seven, which was missing Nnamdi madubuike. Lions offensive coordinator John Morton was on Ravens defensive coordinator Zach Orr at every turn.
Orr’s pressure package was not more effective at throwing Lions quarterback Jared Goff from his game. The Ravens, who had two turnovers against the Browns during Week 2, failed to force any on Monday.
The Ravens have lost a lot of games, and this raises questions about how they close out games week to week. However, the Lions showed significant weaknesses that cannot be addressed in a timely manner before the next match. Baltimore’s run and pass defense collapsed when a single player was lost, and their lauded secondary could not fill in the gaps. The Ravens’ offensive line was beaten at the line-of-scrimmage and the entire offense was brought to its knees. The Ravens have yet to prove their playoff prospects, but it’s not too early to doubt them.
