In recent years, the AFC has been dominated by three teams: The Ravens Bills and Chiefs. This season, they are still considered to be part of that Big Three.
Bill Barnwell of ESPN looked at the AFC’s hierarchy using ESPN’s Football Power Index.
FPI had given the Ravens 20,4% of the chance to be the top seed in the AFC heading into week 1. Next came the Bills (18.8%), then the Chiefs (18.4%).
After their win on Sunday, the Bills have now surpassed the Ravens in the race for the No. The Ravens, at 16.8%, are the second-placed team.
After their Week 1 win of 27-21 over the Chiefs, the Los Angeles Chargers are the third best odds (15.8%). Kansas City dropped to No. Kansas City fell to No. 4 with 7.5%.
Barnwell wrote about the Ravens: “It is telling that the Ravens were able to lose their season opener but still maintain their chances for the top seed. FPI believes that the Ravens are the best football team. The Ravens were a close second to the Eagles in Week 1 and only slightly behind the Chiefs. After they dropped 40 points in Buffalo on a Sean McDermott led defense, FPI is even more impressed with the Ravens .
“That may seem strange, given that the Ravens did lose, but the model gives Baltimore a boost because they played so well against another highly-ranked team on the road. The Ravens only recovered one of their three fumbles, and they went 1-for-3 inside the red zone. This was a surprising result for a team that had the most efficient offense in the league a year earlier. The Ravens averaged almost 9 yards per play. This is the highest amount of yardage any team has achieved against McDermott’s defense since McDermott was the Panthers coordinator in 2016. He faced eventual MVP Matt Ryan and Kyle Shanahan. You’re free to give the Bills defense credit for the fumbles, the red zone stops, etc., but FPI views this as an impressive performance by a great offense.
Barnwell pointed out that while the Bills have the advantage in head-to-head, advanced metrics like FPI and DVOA show Baltimore to be the superior team.
Barnwell wrote, “This is a good team and although the Ravens will be playing the Chiefs before the end October, they have five of their six next games at home.” Baltimore’s schedule becomes very friendly too in the second halves.
