According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter , the Baltimore Ravens are interested in interviewing Robert Saleh, defensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers.

Saleh was hired by the New York Jets as head coach in 2021 after serving as defensive coordinator under Kyle Shanahan, the 49ers’ head coach, from 2017 to 2020. Saleh’s tenure at the Jets didn’t go according to plan. He was fired after his fourth season, and finished his only head coaching stint in New York with a record of 20-36. Saleh was hired as San Francisco’s defensive coordinator for 2025. He is now attracting interest from teams that are looking to hire their next head coach.

Saleh’s tenure with the Jets may be a cause for concern but it is important to note his quarterback situation during those years. Saleh’s fate was sealed from the beginning, when New York placed their bets on BYU quarterback Zach Wilson. The Jets selected Wilson third overall in 2021 NFL Draft. New York shocked the NFL by trading for Green Bay Packers’ four-time MVP Aaron Rodgers after Wilson failed to meet expectations in two consecutive seasons. Rodgers, who was coming off of a disappointing season with the Packers by 2022 was only a year away from winning back to back MVPs. Rodgers ruptured his Achilles in just four snaps of his New York debut, which was a bad sign for the Jets. Rodgers was back on the field for the following season but Saleh fired him after a 2-3 record.

Saleh was a great defensive coach. Even though his team overall disappointed, the defenses were strong. Saleh’s intriguing match with Baltimore’s rich history of defense is a great fit. Saleh could help the Ravens quickly recover from two seasons of poor defensive performances under Zach Orr. Saleh would need to find a good offensive coordinator in Baltimore to replace Todd Monken. Saleh could choose from several candidates with ties to Shanahan’s coaching tree.
