Ravens activate LB Jay Higgins off injured reserve

The Baltimore Ravens have activated Jay Higgins, a rookie linebacker who was not drafted from the injured reserve in advance of their match against the Green Bay Packers on Saturday.

Higgins signed with the Ravens on May 1st and was added to the 53-man team after an impressive performance in preseason defense and special teams. He was a key player on the Ravens’ special teams during the regular season, but a knee injury suffered in Minnesota Week 10 forced him to be placed on injured reserve. Higgins returned last week to practice and was able to quickly return to full participation. He should be able play against Green Bay this Saturday.

Higgins has plenty of work on special teams to do now that he’s healthy. Chandler Martin, a fellow UDFA, took over his snaps when he was injured in early November. Chandler suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in Week 14. Teddye Buchanan, a key special teams player (and defensive starter), was also lost to a torn anterior cruciate ligament in Week 15 by the Ravens. Trenton Simpson is filling his defensive spot, but Higgins can strengthen the Ravens’ coverage unit upon his return.
