Pundit says Ravens will win AFC North title with Lamar Jackson and Derrick Henry combo, improved defense

Keaton Mitchell’s increased role in the offense

Bill Barnwell, ESPN’s Bill Barnwell, cites Keaton Mitchell as one of the most impressive performances he saw in the Ravens 30-16 victory over the Bears.

Mitchell, who had been a healthy scratch in the first four games and only carried the ball three times before this past Sunday, gained 43 yards on four carries, including a gain of 25 yards at a speed of 20.3 mph. This was according to NFL Next Gen Stats.

Mitchell averaged 6.9 yard per carry in his NFL career, despite only attempting 69 times.

Barnwell wrote: “Mitchell will not take Henry’s place, but the Ravens are in need of something to boost their running game.” Even before Lamar Jackson’s hamstring injury the Ravens struggled to maintain consistency on the ground despite some explosive running. The Ravens are 28th in the NFL in terms of success rates on running back carries, which indicates that they have been struggling to keep on schedule and avoid third-and long situations.

Barnwell stated that getting Mitchell involved more in the offense provides a new element and benefits Henry.

Barnwell wrote: “Mitchell may be more of a homerun hitter than an between-the tackles runner, but his role in this offense could be viable.” The Ravens must keep Henry fresh in case they make a postseason run.

Bo Smolka, of Press Box, noted that Mitchell carried the ball three times on the Ravens last possession (including one carry for eight yards which was erased after the Ravens accepted a Bears offside penalty).

Smolka told Glenn Clark Radio that it’s a good idea to bring in scatbacks with fresh legs, especially if the player is tired.
