News & Notes: Malaki Starks Critiques His Rookie Start

John Harbaugh talks about the Odafe Oweh trade and envisions immediate contributions from new safety

John Harbaugh, the Ravens Head Coach, said that the trade of Odafe Oweh (outside linebacker) to Los Angeles Chargers for Gilman and a swapped Day 3 pick came together very quickly. He had not even spoken to his brother Jim about the deal before it was made between Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta, and former Ravens executive turned Chargers general manager Joe Hortiz.

Harbaugh explained, “We were able to look at the big picture and decide what would be best for our team. We also looked at our defense as a whole. All the pieces moving together. We wanted to build the best possible defense for the remainder of the season.”

The Ravens will be able to maximize their versatility by putting three safety players on the field. Kyle Hamilton, who had been out with a groin injury, returned to practice on Wednesday. This could mean that he will be back in action against the Los Angeles Rams this Sunday. Harbaugh expects Gilman to play regardless of the short turnaround.

Harbaugh stated, “Alohi will give us a great deal.” “He is a veteran safety. He had been in a system very similar. He is a proven player. He had an excellent practice today. “I think he fits what we are looking for right now.”

Harbaugh was also a fan of Gardner-Johnson. He said Baltimore had been working to make this move for a long time after Gardner-Johnson, who was released from the Houston Texans following three games, was released.

Harbaugh stated, “I have always enjoyed the way he plays.” “He brings it. He has a “bring it” attitude. He is a physically strong player with a lot energy and juice. He’s a veteran who knows how the game is played.”

Harbaugh said that he did not think Gardner-Johnson would need much time to learn the defensive scheme. He can be called up from the practice team three times.

Harbaugh called him “smart”. “He’s smart, he knows the game and he has a great day today. So those are the conversations we will have.”
