Keaton Mitchel has had more involvement since the Ravens bye week. However, he is not super involved. He carried the ball four times against Chicago, Miami and Minnesota. Then he had a season high six carries in the Browns game. In the last two weeks, Mitchell has carried the ball two times each versus Jets and Bengals. Mitchell scored a touchdown with one of his touches at Thanksgiving, a creative counter toss. Mitchell also tied the season-high of three targets for the passing game.
Mitchell’s snaps dropped in the last two weeks after he played 26% of Ravens offensive snaps versus the Browns. Mitchell played just eight snaps in the Bengals game, but it was an anomaly because of the Ravens’ efforts to recover from a big deficit and all the turnovers.
Mitchell has room to grow. The Ravens would like him to play more than eight snaps.
You don’t want Derrick Henry, a future Hall of Famer, to be taken off too often. Another factor is the level of trust that the Ravens have in Mitchell on third down. Is he dependable in pass protection, and is he dangerous as a wide receiver? Rasheen Ali was used more than Mitchell in these situations by the Ravens. These aren’t Mitchells’ strengths. But does his potential for big plays overshadow them?
Mitchell’s ability to handle the ball well is something that I wouldn’t be surprised if the Ravens gave him more chances down the stretch, when they can rely more on their ground game. Henry should get the ball and Mitchell can be sprinkled throughout. I believe you will see both if the Ravens’ offense, especially the rushing attacks, starts to click.
