Mailbag: Why isn’t Lamar Jackson running as much?

Brown Lamar Jackson’s decline in rushing and planned runs was discussed last week. He averages a career low 5.6 rushing tries per game. This is significantly less than his average career of 9.6 or the average 8.2 attempts he made per game last season.

Jackson stated, “I will do anything to win.” “I don’t pay much attention to how many rushes I make.

“We have Derrick Henry and Keaton Mitchel, Justice [Hill] [and] Rasheen Ali. We have all these players to run the football – and Zay [Flowers] sometimes – so I don’t worry about it as long as we win.”

Jackson’s evolution as a QB is reflected in his running less. In three of his four first seasons, Jackson averaged over 10 carries a game. However, he hasn’t averaged double digits in carries since the year 2021.

Jackson’s legs will become less important as he gets older. He’s good enough to do it. He has completed 68% of all his passes so far this season. Over the past three years, he has completed at least 66.7 percent of his passes. This is something that many people did not expect when he entered the NFL.

Jackson is still an excellent runner, but he has missed three games so far this season due to a hamstring injury and one practice (knee) last week. Jackson is the only one who knows how he’s feeling physically. But if he can continue to win with less running, then I don’t see a problem. Jackson’s dynamic running should be saved for the Ravens’ stretch run, and hopefully playoffs.
