Mailbag: Why didn’t Ravens do more at the Trade Deadline?

Mink Do not think of the deadline for trades as a Costco where you can find anything. The New York Jets made a few jaw-dropping trades, but there was no surge in volume.

only one offensive guard was traded from the beginning of the season until the trade deadline. Trevor Penning was traded from the Saints, a former offensive tackle first-round who struggled with his transition to left guard. We don’t know who the Ravens called or what teams were on the trading block but the fact that there was only one offensive tackle traded around the league indicates that the market wasn’t very rich.

The Ravens also believe that their offensive line is improving, and they feel that guards Daniel Faalele & Andrew Vorhees have made progress. According to Pro Football Focus , Baltimore’s offensive is ranked 18 thin the NFL. The Ravens didn’t upgrade the offensive line because it wasn’t a strength for them.

The story is similar at defensive tackle. Williams was the lone player moved, and the Cowboys had to give up both first-round and second-round draft picks in order to acquire him. The Ravens never made a big move, because their philosophy is to protect first-round draft picks and develop players.

The Ravens will benefit from adding Dre’Mont Jones at a much lower price. He is a physically strong outside linebacker that will ripple through the entire defense.

We’ll never know again if the Ravens “closed” other deals. I thought the Ravens could get a defensive tackle, but they clearly didn’t think there was any good deal to be made (or even one on the table).
