Jaire Alexander will not be playing in the Ravens home opener Sunday against the Cleveland Browns at M&T Bank Stadium.
Alexander was not injured when he entered the game, but the Ravens gave him a chance to strengthen his body after a month-long absence from training camp due to a knee injury.
John Harbaugh, the head coach of the Ravens, said that he spoke with Alexander this week about it after Alexander’s rough debut against Buffalo. Pro Football Focus reported that Alexander had three receptions for 100 yards and a costly fourth down defensive pass interference. On the play where the Bills were in position to kick the game-winning field goals, Alexander was beaten.
Harbaugh stated on Wednesday that “practice is essential, especially for that position, to be exactly right.” Harbaugh said that the main goal is to get him back on track. He’s in good health, but we need to get him healthy so that we can play like Jaire, as I fully expect. “We’ll give him a chance to do that.”
Alexander’s absence allows T.J. Tampa Jr., a second-year cornerback, to play a larger role against the Browns. Tampa was selected by the Ravens in the fourth round last year but only played seven games due to injuries.
Tampa was the player who had the most touches on the ball this summer. He played 18 defensive snaps for the Ravens against Buffalo, and made two tackles.
“He is doing a great job.” Harbaugh stated on Friday that “[He] looks great.” “He had an excellent week of training this week.” He’s had good practice weeks the last two weeks.
Other Ravens inactives include running back Keaton Mitchel for the second consecutive week, fullback Patrick Ricard, tight end Isaiah Likely, offensive tackle Carson Vinson and outside linebacker David Ojabo.
Reuben Lowery III, a rookie safety undrafted by the Ravens, will replace Alexander on the active roster. Five cornerbacks are active for the Ravens against the Browns.
Jack Conklin, a two-time All-Pro first team right tackle (eye/elbow), will not be able to play for the Browns. Cornelius Lucas is the new starter.
Quinshon Judkins will make his Browns debut on Sunday after missing almost all of the training camp. He also met with officials from the league this week to discuss domestic assault allegations. He is awaiting a potential suspension, but he’s eligible to play on Sunday at M&T Bank Stadium.
