Instant recap of Baltimore Ravens Week 12 victory over New York Jets

The Baltimore Ravens (6-5), who have won five straight games, beat the New York Jets (2-4) 23-10.

A strong performance on the special teams and defense helped the Ravens overcome another sluggish offensive performance. Lamar Jackson, the Ravens’ quarterback, completed only 13 of 23 passes for 153 yard and added just 11 yards in seven carries. Derrick Henry, the running back, led the backfield, with 64 rushing yard and two touchdowns. However, his average carry was only 3.0 yards. Zay Flowers, the receiver, again led with five receptions and 58 yards. The offense averaged only 4.2 yards per play, and converted only two third downs.

Baltimore’s defense was led by Roquan Smith’s 11 tackles and Kyle Hamilton’s 10. Edge rushers Mike Green, Dre’Mont Jones and defensive tackle Taven Bryan also contributed sacks. The 10 points and the 287 yards that were allowed by this unit are their second and third best marks for the season. The team forced two turnovers to make it 10 for their winning streak of five games.

The Jets and Ravens both punted into the second quarter. After a 12-play drive of 79 yards, the Jets scored a touchdown on a 13 yard reception by wideout John Metchie. Baltimore moved down the field with a 34-yard kickoff return by Ravens runningback Keaton Mitchel and some chunk plays from wide receiver Zay Flower, but they were unable to move forward in the redzone and settled for a 31-yard Tyler Loop field goal. Tyler Loop, a rookie kicker, had a five-for-five perfect day. However none of his attempts were beyond 35 yards.

After two incomplete passes and a false-start, the Ravens received the ball at the start of the second half. They needed a pass interference penalty from the defense to advance the chains. Baltimore’s drive was kept alive by another third-down conversion from veteran receiver DeAndre Hoskins. Five straight runs brought Baltimore to the two yard line. Henry sprinted into the endzone on 3rd and goal to give the Ravens an early 10-7 lead.

On the Jets’ next drive, Baltimore’s defensive unit made one of the many big stops they had in the game. They stopped a fourth-down attempt by the Jets in their own territory. This led to another Henry touchdown behind a massive block by fullback Patrick Ricard.

The Ravens’ offense responded to a landing zone penalty that Loop received on his subsequent kickoff. Jackson threw some of his best passes of the day including a 30-yarder for wide receiver Devontez Walker before throwing Hopkins into the end zone when the Ravens were on third down. Loop made another conversion, and the Ravens were in complete control with a 20-10 lead.

On New York’s subsequent drive, the Jets were able to gain 55 yards in two catches from running back Breece hall. This brought them up to the 12-yard-line. The Ravens had missed several tackles on those plays, and it looked like they were going to allow Hall into the end zone with his next carry. But cornerback Marlon Hushrey grabbed the ball from his hands. Baltimore gained possession at its own three-yard mark after safety Alohi Gillman dived on the ball. Humphrey’s strip was probably the best play of the match. A Jets touchdown could have closed the gap by three points, but Baltimore took control, even though they were backed up on their own three yard line.

Henry gave the Ravens a little breathing room by gaining 17 yards, but a hold penalty by Tyler Linderbaum by the center ended the Ravens’ drive. Jordan Stout punted a 67 yarder at the Jets five-yard line, after a 74 yard bomb earlier in this game.

This was the end of the game. New York was in a clear passing situation with 3:11 remaining in the game. The Ravens’ pass rush had the opportunity to pin their ears and attack Taylor. Jones’ second sack came on third down. A stop on the following play put Baltimore in the red area. The Jets’ last ditch effort was thwarted by T.J. Tampa, a Ravens cornerback. After another Loop field-goal, he made his first career interception.

The Ravens knelt out to go above.500 this season for the first. The Ravens also took the lead in the AFC North following the Chicago Bears’ loss to Pittsburgh Steelers. Baltimore will play the Cincinnati Bengals in a Thanksgiving game that could mark the return of Joe Burrow, the star quarterback.
