Everyone in the NFL seems to have an opinion on Isaiah Likely’s overturned touchdown catch during the Ravens’ defeat to Pittsburgh on Sunday.
Ben Roethlisberger, former Steelers quarterback, weighed in on the Ravens’ situation. His take will surprise Ravens supporters.
Big Ben thinks the Ravens have been wronged and that the touchdown which would’ve put Baltimore in the lead with less than three minutes remaining should’ve stood.
Mark Butterworth, NFL Vice President for Instant Replay, explained that Likely had not completed a third action “common to the game” before Steelers cornerback Joey Porter Jr. knocked him out of the ball.
Roethlisberger claimed that the catch had been made in the endzone, so a third move or any other football maneuver wasn’t necessary.
“Did He Make A Football Move? He didn’t. Roethlisberger agreed with this statement on his podcast “Footbahlin ” With Ben Roethlisberger . “So then, people will ask, ‘Why was it a touchdown?” Here’s why. He is in the endzone, and he doesn’t think about making a move. He does not have to go up the field. He doesn’t need to tuck the ball. He thinks it’s a touchdown as soon as his two feet are on the ground in the endzone.
“If the same play occurred on the 30-yard-line and he caught it that way, I guarantee that he will twist the field up, he will try to tuck the ball. He will do something else. He says, “I don’t need to do a tuck because I am in the end zone.” I had it under control and put my feet down. I don’t need to do anything more. “If that’s the middle of the pitch, he won’t hold the ball out.”
Roethlisberger said he understands the Ravens fans’ anger and that Steelers fans might feel the same if the Ravens receiver had been Pittsburgh.
How would Steelers’ fans feel if the same thing happened to Pat Freiermuth or DK Metcalf? Roethlisberger stated. “I know Steelers’ fans will say, ‘That isn’t a catch. Good call! Good call! It was a great call!
