On Sunday, the rookies won big. They ended a losing streak of two games by winning 24-0 in Cincinnati. Check out how the rookies did.
Multiple defensive rookies put up tremendous effort in Sunday’s shutout. Malaki Starks, who only allowed one reception, earned a coverage grade of 61.4 from PFF. He had five tackles in the game, as well as a pass defenced and a force fumble. His 88.9 grade for run defense led the team. Starks, who has played 90% of the snaps each week as a rookie safety, has been consistent. Starks has been able to cover his markers, sort through traffic in the run game and limit errors.
Green seems to have hit a rookie brick wall after a couple of games with high ceilings following the bye-week. He did get a sack, but it was more an effort/coverage than a victory. According to PFF, that was the only pressure he had on Sunday out of 20 pass rush snaps. In the past two weeks, his run grades also decreased, which indicates some struggles. Zach Orr is putting together some pressure packages that are causing the Ravens to struggle. Orr and his staff should focus on Green’s ability to rush the passer in the final few games of the year, with Tavius Robinson’s return adding some heft to the running game.
Buchanan was injured on a punt-coverage play and left the field after 12 snaps. John Harbaugh, the head coach, confirmed on Monday that Buchanan had torn his ACL. This will end Buchanan’s rookie season. The fourth-rounder’s season ends in a disappointing way. Buchanan’s ability to earn a spot in the starting lineup as an interior linebacker as a Day 3 pick is impressive. It was one of hardest transitions for a college player to NFL. Buchanan had been second in the team for tackles prior to this injury. Hopefully, he will recover in time to take over his starting position in 2026.
Vinson played only six snaps Sunday. He was a relief for Ronnie Stanley who had left the game at the end. Harbaugh stated on Monday that Stanley will be evaluated over the course of the week due to his soreness. Vinson could get his first career start if Stanley is unable to play, as long as the Ravens do not go with Joe Noteboom. Vinson was given the gameday activations in recent weeks over Noteboom, showing confidence in the rookie. We’ll see if they have the confidence to start him in Stanley’s absence.
Tyler Loop had another great day. Tyler Loop made a 27-yard field goals and three extra points. The kickoffs and the coverage were much better than last week. Loop’s kickoffs were criticized by Harbaugh for not going far enough. Four of his five kickoffs put the Bengals offense at or below the 30-yard-line.
Wester had another disappointingly quiet day. Wester has been shaken since his error in Cleveland. He had started the season with such confidence when it came to fielding punts. He hasn’t been returning as many punts and has even let the ball bounce beyond the 20-yard mark, which allowed punt coverage units down the ball, forcing the Ravens offense into their own territory. Wester was a strong player to start the season, and it would be great if he could find his feet again as the rest is coming together.
