It took the Ravens four straight wins, but one of the most ugly games you will ever see to defeat the Cleveland Browns by 23-16. We’ll talk about the good and bad.
Kyle Hamilton :Right Now, this is the Ravens’ best player. Hamilton is playing and doing more than anyone else at this time. Hamilton is making an impact on defense that rivals the Defensive Players of the Year, and he’s doing it at multiple positions. He was the leader of the team, with nine tackles, three for loss, two pass breaks, and a sack. It was a tremendous impact on all levels.
Mark Andrews : What an amazing night for the Ravens’ best pass-catcher. Andrews racked up the yards to break the franchise record in the early hours of the night. He now needs just four more catches to win the triple crown. He then delivered the biggest play in the entire game, scoring his first career touchdown on 35-yard rushing.
Chidobe Awuzie: Mr. He’s the second best corner on the roster, despite being underrated. Awuize’s second-best play was a stonewalling of an endzone shot with perfect technique on third and 5 to avoid a pass interference call. He ended the night with three major passes defended. The other corner position opposite Nate Wiggins is a target for many (see Brandon Stephens, last year). Awuzie is far from a liability and this was the first game he played as a Raven.
Nate WigginsWiggins has nabbed the third interception for the season and is now the leader of the Ravens. Wiggins, in just his second season of playing football, has become one of the best corners in the league. He is a reliable lockdown player that the Ravens are able to stick on one end of the field without worrying.
Keyon Martin : Martin has done more than just fill in for Marlon. He had a sack, and he also intercepted a pass. But more importantly, Martin did a good job in coverage. Martin was a UDFA who was stepping up for a starter. It would have been easy for the Browns’ game plan to be to target #38 every time he came on the field, but he didn’t let himself get picked on.
Kyle Van Noy : An excellent game by the veteran leader of the edge room. Van Noy scored his second sack this season by securing a quick win inside against the tackle and dropping Dillon Gabriel. He then delivered a bone crushing shot to Shedeur Sander that led Nate Wiggins to pick the ball up.
Dre’Mont Jones Jones was impressive in his Ravens debut, and in his second game he continued to deliver key pressures, including one that sealed the game at fourth down. He was able to time the snap perfectly and beat Wyatt Teller to Shedeur Sanders so badly that Teller asked for flags in mid-play as he tried to catch up. It’s still a while before he gets his first purple and black sack, but it is already evident in the first two games.
Zay Flowers Flowers has been forgotten after his great start to the season. Flowers’ role has been diminished in recent times due to offensive problems, Jackson’s injuries, and a bad offensive line. He continues to contribute 60-plus yard games and help this offense dig out of its hole. Three catches, 78 yards. All three were first downs. The 48-yard play set up the Ravens’ first touchdown.
Derrick Henry Henry still has it. He displayed burst, despite the poor play of the offensive line. Henry, who had only run for 23 yards in the Browns’ first game of the season at a rate of 2.1 yards per carry, bounced back to gain 103 yards over 18 carries. That is a 5.7 yard average. Henry ran 59 yards, his longest run of the season. They need to stop running Henry up the middle from shotgun.
Keaton Mitchel:The interception that bounced of his hands was awful. Mitchell was impressive in his expanded role this week, with Justice Hill absent. Mitchell had eight touches total for 54 yards of all-purpose yardage, including a 17 yard reception. He showed flashes of speed tonight, even in small moments where he was able to gain yards or get back up to the line on plays that were clearly broken behind the lines. Henry’s runs aren’t working at the goal line, so the Ravens could use him in the red area.
Interceptions : They almost cost the Ravens the game, and they would have been their biggest loss if it had happened. The first one gave the Browns the advantage in the second quarter. The Ravens’ defense held the Browns at a field-goal despite starting the game in goal-to go after a punt went awry. With the score 3-6, the Ravens had a chance to gain control. On the second play, the ball bounces from Keaton’s hands to Carson Schwesinger for a pick six.
In the second half with the Ravens trailing 16-10, Nate Wiggins made a huge play by intercepting Sanders, and returning it inside the 20. On the play in the red zone, with the chance to gain an advantage, the right tackle Roger Rosengarten is pushed back into Jackson’s lap as he throws the ball. Instead, the ball flies off Rosengarten’s head, launching into the air and landing in a defender’s hands. Lamar Jackson hasn’t thrown an interception in a while that was his fault. It’s important that his offensive line and playmakers, as well as his supporting cast, are better.
Lamar JacksonNow we know the interceptions weren’t on Jackson, can we be honest? Since his return, he hasn’t been playing at his best. Other than the second half against Dolphins, the offense looks disjointed. This is not surprising. Jackson has not been at 100% since his brilliant performance in Buffalo, when he took the shot by Ed Oliver. He has also played behind the worst offensive line in football. They constantly sped up his clock and made him uncomfortable.
The Ravens’ offensive line is what is. The Ravens’ line is what it is. They did not fix it during the offseason. Lamar Jackson needs to work with Todd Monken, and other experts, to find a way to run the offense. Otherwise, the team is headed for an obvious one-and done in the first round. If Lamar Jackson can be his magic self again, the team may have a shot at a postseason run.
LaJohntay Wester :I have been effusive with my praises for Wester during this season. He is the best punt-returner the team has ever had since Jacoby Jones ran it back. Last week, he looked as if he was ready to step up and take over the kick-return role. This season, he’s been calm, steady and, most importantly, confident when it comes to fielding punts. This changed today, when he faced a lefty with a strange spin in a windy Cleveland game. He misjudged the punt and tried to dive catch it. This resulted in a Browns turnover.
Wester was then removed from the kick-return unit but retained his punt-return duties. He didn’t commit a single mistake the rest of that night, but it was clear his confidence had been eroded. This is not a problem that will last, but a bad night for a rookie.
Red Zone Offense:After the Ravens’ game tonight, they might be statistically the worst red-zone offense in the NFL. The Ravens only converted once out of four attempts within the 20-yard line. It was a play that looked more like a pass than if the offensive line had picked up Henry and tossed him over the line.
In 2025, the Ravens were unable to convert from a red zone offense that was unstoppable with Lamar Jackson and Derrick Henry. This is an incredible collapse. They have not been able run Henry through the middle at the goal line this season. It’s high time for a new strategy in the red zone. Running Henry up the middle out of shotgun and sprinting out to the right no longer work in 2025.
Offensive line: I am tired of it. It’s a problem every week. This unit is destroying any plans for the Ravens’ to go from grinding out wins, to dominating other teams and becoming one of the top NFL teams. Guards are the most vulnerable, but all five players are at risk of losing any rep. Faalele is not the one blocking air. It’s Rosengarten who gets pushed back into Jackson’s arms. If it’s not Vorhees getting manhandled, it’s Linderbaum getting beat one-on-one. Stanley is merely trying to stay alive against Myles Garrett, who sacked Jackson 4 times during the game.
It’s not going to change soon and I don’t know how they can realistically fix it by 2026.
