Baltimore Ravens Snap Count analysis, Week 16 – Questionable usage of running backs clouds a critical loss

Injuring two starters on the Ravens’ offensive line during the Ravens’ Week 16 loss to New England Patriots. Lamar Jackson left the game before halftime, after 26 snaps. Andrew Vorhees followed him (42 snaps), later in second half. Tyler Huntley (29 snapped) finished the game as quarterback, and Emery Jones Jr. at left guard took over with a snap share of 24%.

Derrick Henry (24 snaps vs 19) played five more snaps in the backfield than Keaton Mitchel (19 to 24). Rasheen Ali took 12 snaps, his normal third down role. Henry was unstoppable in the overall game, despite a fumble that cost him a crucial first quarter. He totaled 128 yard with two touchdowns. Henry was not on the field for the last two drives in the fourth quarter. This was a questionable coaching decision.

Rashod bateman’s performance was non-factory as he played 38 snaps (69%), with no catches made on two targets. Zay Flowers, meanwhile, caught all seven targets in 49 snaps for more than 100 scrimmage yard and a touchdown. He also lost a costly turnover on the last offensive drive. Deandre Hopkins, who played 20 snaps, had a season high of four receptions and 41 receiving yards.

Charlie Kolar led all tight ends with 27 snaps, followed by Mark Andrews (24) and Isaiah Likely (22). Likely was not targeted in the passing game, and he was blanked. Andrews and Kolar had combined three catches for 39 yards. The three players had positive impacts in the run blocking department.

The Ravens defense played 70+ snaps for the second week in a row. Kyle Hamilton, who was a game-time injury decision for Hamilton, played 100% of the snaps. Alohi Gilman, Malaki Starks and Ar’Darius Washington all had snap shares above 30%.

Trenton Simpson stepped back into the starting linebacker role after Teddye Buchanan was injured. He played 53 snaps (72%), alongside Roquan, who lasted the entire game with 74 snaps. William Kwenkeu and Jake Hummel, backups, each played a single defensive snap. Marlin Humphrey and Nate Wiggins played the entire game at cornerback with Chidobe awuzie out due to an injury.

Mike Green played the least snaps at the edge (34 snaps), and his playing time dropped significantly. Tavius Robinson led the group with 53 snaps (72%), followed by Dre’Mont Jones (45 snaps) and Kyle Van Noy (36 snaps).

Travis Jones, as usual, led all defensive linemen in snaps with 57 (77%) while racking up seven pressures. He also landed a quarterback strike. John Jenkins was activated and played 50% of the snaps. Josh Tupou, a practice squad member who had been called up for this game, saw 30 defensive reps. Brent Urban played 26 snaps.
