Quarterback: B+

Quarterback: B+
Lamar Jackson was on his way to an impressive performance before he suffered a back injury in the second half. Jackson completed 7 of 10 passes for 101 yard and made several off-script throws. Zay Flowers was the recipient of several long gains in the air. One of his three incomplete passes was a dropped ball. Tyler Huntley, to Jackson’s relief did an admirable job during the second half. He led consecutive touchdown drives. Huntley completed nine of his ten pass attempts, but only managed 65 yards. He also gained two yards through the ground.
Running back: B+
Derrick Henry’s lost turnover late in the 1st quarter was a negative turning point as it killed Ravens’ momentum. The Ravens eventually recovered enough to gain a double-digit advantage later in the match. Henry had already rushed 51 yards and scored a touchdown before fumbling. He then rumbled to gain more yardage after the mishap. He had 128 total rushing yards on 18 carries, with two touchdowns. Henry was oddly sidelined for the last two drives despite dominating the third quarter. The rest of the backfield was relatively quiet. Keaton Mitchel gained just 13 yards from nine carries, while Rasheen had two catches of two yards.
Wide Receiver: B
Flowers had done everything right up until the final play of the game, when he lost his fumble just two minutes before time expired. Flowers’ fumble sealed a Ravens loss, even though they may not have been able to drive down the field or score a touchdown that would have given them the lead. Flowers had seven catches totaling 84 yards, and a rushing touchdown of 18 yards in the third-quarter. The fumble is his Achilles heel. He has made some big catches, and moved the sticks, but it’s a costly mistake. Deandre Hopkins was impressive with his four receptions and 41 yards. He also had multiple third-down contested grabs to extend drives. Rashod bateman failed to connect on either of his two targets, and Devontez walker was not targeted.
Tight end: C
Mark Andrews played a minor role in the passing game with only two catches totaling 21 yards. Before halftime, he almost made a costly mistake with a lateral pass that was a bit of a mess. The illegal forward throw prevented a fumble, which would have allowed the Patriots to score. Charlie Kolar made a great 18-yard catch and Isaiah Likely, surprisingly, was not a player with no targets. The tight ends made a collective impact on run blocking, and created some lanes for Henry.
Offensive line: B+
The Ravens offensive line had one of its better games recently, despite some frustrating false starts on the same drive. Huntley and Jackson were both sacked just once in several drives. Jackson did not get sacked at all during the first half. Baltimore’s pass-protection was solid, despite the five quarterback hits by the Patriots. They were excellent at run blocking. They kept Henry’s lanes open all night, and they also created space for Flowers on his 18 yard end-around touchdown. The Ravens had 171 yards rushing and three touchdowns as a team. They averaged 5.2 yards per rush.
Defensive line: C+
The Ravens’ defense was strong against the run almost the entire game. Rhamondre Stephenson finally broke through with two long runs late in the 4th quarter. Stevenson’s first down of 11 yards and 21-yard touchdown were both backbreakers. Drake Maye, Treyveon Hamilton and the rest of the Ravens’ ground players were all contained. The Ravens defensive front didn’t do much to pressure Maye through the interior in terms of pass-rush. Travis Jones did have one quarterback hit but the Ravens’ defensive front was not very aggressive.
Edge rusher: C+
The lack of pass rush extends to edge rushers. On paper, the final numbers of 4 sacks and 10 hits to the quarterback look impressive. But Maye often had clean pockets with plenty of time for him to throw multiple times in a single play. Dre’Mont Jones was again impressive with two quarterback hits and a timely sack. Kyle Van Noy also had a solid game, breaking up a pass that would have otherwise been a touchdown. While the Ravens edge rushers deserved some credit for their solid run defense, they needed more energy and disruption.
Linebacker: C+
Roquan Smith, Trenton Simpson and others made plays against the rush. Smith’s lackluster performance is disappointing, considering his important role. Simpson started in Teddye Buchanan’s absence (knee). He had two tackles for loss and a sack. The former third round pick made a great open-field tackle on Henderson. The Patriots were successful in completing some longer throws above the linebackers’ heads over the middle field. Hunter Henry and Austin Hooper, their tight ends, combined to make eight catches for 69 yards and a touchdown.
Cornerback: C+
Marlon’s Humphrey had a good start to the night after he snared an interception during the Patriots first drive. His performance went downhill from that point on. Humphrey’s performance went downhill from there on. He also gave up several catches to Stefon Diggs, the primary defender. And he should have been penalized for defensive pass interferance on a late long pass to Keyshon Boette. Nate Wiggins was credited with two pass breaks and almost a big interception in the final minutes of the game. He was able to time a break perfectly on a slant but couldn’t pull the ball down, giving the Ravens a lead with a few minutes left. Chidobe, who had a foot injury and was out of the game for the Ravens, would have been a welcome addition to their team.
Safety: B-
Alohi Gillman’s night was a mixed bag. He missed some tackles in the open field, but he also had eight total tackles and a breakup. Kyle Hamilton made a great tackle for loss to stop a long Henderson rush and also had his own pass breakup. Ar’Darius Washington played a part in one of the most important defensive plays, forcing a Maye fumble just before the halftime. This prevented the Patriots from scoring a touchdown or a field-goal and taking the lead into halftime. Washington had two quarterback hits, one sack and a tackle for loss. Diggs beat him in coverage during a crucial fourth-and short pass in the final minutes of the game. Malaki Starks made three solo tackles in the game.
Special Team: C+
Devontez Walks’ excellent defense of a Patriots fake punt in the third-quarter was the play of the special teams game. Aside from that one moment, it wasn’t the best night for special teams. Tyler Loop missed a 56 yard attempt in the second half, but he made his other attempt and scored all three extras points. Jordan Stout punted twice for 40 yards and 45 yards respectively.
